Are you curious about how to contribute to Django?

Contributing to Django can be seen as a rite of passage for a Django developer. It’s rewarding to have your name in the annals of Django as a contributor. If you’re not yet sure contributing is worth your time, here’s why I think it is.

If you are interested in contributing, I’m hosting “Learn how to contribute to Django” events on the Django Discord server. These are currently weekly on Tuesdays at times that differ each week. Check the events on the Discord server to find the next event.

Why host these events?

Getting a change merged can be daunting. The Django project has high standards and a lot written down about how to contribute(a lot meaning >2 hours of read time). When you’re new, this tends to result in friction and frustration, and you encounter various false summits in your quest to get a commit into Django.

What I’ve found is that people want a little reassurance, a little guidance, someone to validate their experience when contributing. Sprints at conferences like DjangoCon and PyCon are fantastic at this. As is the contribution mentorship program, Djangonaut Space. The challenge is that those events are infrequent and require a high level of community organizing.

This event is intended to be slim, simple, and have low friction. It’s intended to be repeatable by other contributors while still being beneficial to new people. And hopefully it provides a nice human hook to help people learn how to give back to the Django community.
