The Django team is happy to announce the release of Django 4.2. This version has been designated as a long-term support (LTS) release, which means that security and data loss fixes will be applied for at least the next three years. It will also receive fixes for crashing bugs, major functionality bugs in newly-introduced features, and regressions from older versions of Django for the next eight months until December 2023. The release notes cover the farrago of new features in detail, but a few …

And I’m done!

April 2, 2023 » Carlton's latest posts. » [Archived Version]

The week that was 2023 WK13. So, that’s it. I’m retired 🥳 — this week was my last as a Django Fellow. It’s been a great ride, and a massive honour. But now it’s time for other things. Everyone was very kind this week. Mariusz made me a cake. Others sent kind words. It was nice to wrap up in time for Django 4.2 next week. I’m looking forward to two things mainly: fewer notifications, and being able to focus on a specific task for extended periods. Updates I posted A Chat About the Future of…

Django Built to Last

March 30, 2023 » Better Simple » [Archived Version]

I recently reread “Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies” by Jim Collins and Jerry I. Porras. While I read it in the context of my day job, it was hard not to try to apply it elsewhere in my life. Heck, the authors specifically call this out. What follows is my opinion for the future of the Django community as a whole. I certainly don’t speak for the thousands of people involved. My hope is that this will motivate others to contemplate and share. I’d love to see how ever…

Ellen's Alien Game / Display Related / Neovim config - Building SaaS with Python and Django #157

March 30, 2023 » Django on Matt Layman » [Archived Version]

In this episode, I did another Exercism problem in Python that focused on Python classes. After the exercise, I deployed my model change from last stream and discussed deployment strategy. Then we worked on some of the display pieces for the new feature. Once the feature was added, I discussed performance testing and showed some performance problems that the new feature created that I then fixed. We ended the stream with some Neovim configuration to correct some LSP formatting problems.

A Chat about the Future of Django

March 29, 2023 » Carlton's latest posts. » [Archived Version]

Yesterday we had DSF President, Chaim Kirby, join us for Django Chat. Due to our super-speedy production team (Will) that's out today. Clearly it's nice if you do listen to the podcast but, given that it's just us chatting, I don't normally think that you should listen. Well perhaps this time, yes. As well as Chaim, Will has just come off of three years as DSF Treasurer, and I'm wrapping up tomorrow after five years as a Django Fellow. You don't have to agree with what we say but, we touch on t…
